WALDEN SAVINGS BANK AWARDS 2024 DAVID T. COCKS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP TO CORNWALL HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE

WALDEN SAVINGS BANK AWARDS 2024 DAVID T. COCKS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP TO CORNWALL HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE

MONTGOMERY, N.Y. Walden Savings Bank is proud to announce that Garcia Blevins Castillo Warren, a recent graduate of Cornwall High School and a decorated Eagle Scout, has been awarded the 2024 Walden Savings Bank David T. Cocks Memorial Scholarship. The $2,500 scholarship, administered by the Community Foundation of Orange & Sullivan, is presented annually to an incoming college student who exemplifies the character and values of the late David T. Cocks, a former President and CEO of Walden Savings Bank.

Garcia's impressive Eagle Scout Project, which earned him this prestigious award, focused on the removal of invasive species in a centrally located area of Black Rock Forest. This 0.25-acre project involved the removal of multi-flora rose and Japanese Barbary, both known for their aggressive spread and detrimental impact on native ecosystems. Following the removal, Garcia and his team of 15 volunteers planted 20 native species to restore the natural habitat. The project, which amassed a total of 122 volunteer, was executed with meticulous planning and approval from various boards, including his troop's board, the Black Rock Forest Manager, and the Eagle Board.

In addition to his environmental efforts, Garcia is a talented trumpet player who participated in Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Pit Orchestra at Cornwall High School. His musical accomplishments have also earned him selections in high-level ensembles, including the All-County Orchestra and the NYSBDA Honors Jazz Ensemble. This fall, Garcia will attend Bowdoin College, where he plans to double major in neuroscience and music.

"Garcia embodies the spirit of dedication and community service that Dave Cocks valued so deeply," said Derrik R. Wynkoop, President & CEO of Walden Savings Bank. "We are honored to support his continued education and look forward to seeing the impact he will undoubtedly make in the future."
