Life happens. Maybe you misplaced a check, wrote one with the wrong amount, or simply need to prevent a payment from going through. Whatever the reason, Walden Savings Bank is here to help.
A stop payment can be a useful tool for protecting your account, but timing is important. Here's what every Walden Savings Bank customer should know.
What Is a Stop Payment?
A stop payment is a request you make asking Walden Savings Bank not to process a specific payment. This is most commonly used for paper checks but may also apply to certain recurring electronic (ACH) payments, depending on the circumstances.
If the payment has not yet been processed, we'll make every effort to stop it before funds leave your account.
When Should You Request a Stop Payment?
A stop payment may be appropriate if:
- You've lost a check and are concerned it could be found or used by someone else.
- A check was stolen before it was cashed.
- You made an error when writing a check, such as the wrong amount or payee.
- You no longer need the payment to be made because other arrangements have been made.
- You need to stop a recurring ACH payment after following the proper cancellation process with the merchant.
If you're unsure whether a stop payment is the right solution, our team is happy to discuss your options.
Act Quickly
The sooner you contact us, the better. A stop payment can only be placed if the payment has not already cleared your account. Once a check has been cashed or an electronic payment has been processed, it generally cannot be stopped.
When you contact Walden Savings Bank, having the following information available will help us process your request as quickly as possible:
- Check number (if applicable)
- Dollar amount
- Date the check was written
- Payee name
- Your account number
Can I Place a Stop Payment Online?
Walden Savings Bank customers can conveniently request a stop payment through Online or Mobile Banking or by contacting us or visiting any of our branch locations.
If you're unsure whether your payment has already cleared, our team can review your account and help determine the best course of action.
Are There Fees?
There is a $35 fee per item fee for each stop payment request. Because stop payments can only be processed before an item clears your account, we encourage you to contact us as soon as possible if you think you need to stop a payment.
When a Stop Payment Isn't the Right Solution
While stop payments are helpful in many situations, they aren't the answer for every type of transaction.
A stop payment generally cannot:
- Reverse a payment that has already cleared your account.
- Stop a completed debit card purchase.
- Cancel a wire transfer that has already been sent.
- Resolve disputes over products or services you've already paid for.
If you believe you've experienced fraud or notice an unauthorized transaction, contact Walden Savings Bank immediately. Our team can help you understand your options and work quickly to protect your account.
